A Little Slice of Heaven

I had a serious to do list today. I was going to work in the yard, clean up around the house, and catch up on some tv shows I have taped. Instead, I abandoned it all and headed over to the barn to ride. I spent most of my weekend over there in between rain storms and I can’t stress how therapeutic it’s been!

I read the quote below the other day… I’ve searched high and low for the author, but can’t find him/her.

“Religion is a person sitting in a church thinking about kayaking. Spirituality is sitting in a kayak thinking about God.”

As I sat there on Sue’s back and just looked out at the lake, I felt a calm come over me. Call it God, call it relaxation, call it just enjoying the moment. It was great. I could even feel Sue relax under me. There was something so spiritual about being out there, one with my horse, in the great outdoors.

The housework will always be there, but moments like this are far and few between!

Habemus Papam!

I know, it’s a few days late, but it’s been a busy week! For those of you who don’t read Latin (and really, how many of us do?) the title of this post translates to “We have a pope!”, the declaration made by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran on Tuesday.

This was followed by Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio from Argentina stepping out onto the balcony. He had chosen the name Pope Francis, likely after St. Francis of Assisi, known for his work with the poor and his compassion for animals.

I love that Pope Francis is a man of firsts. The first Latin American pope – make that the first from the Americas. The first Jesuit. The first to choose the name Francis. More than the actual stats, he started of his papacy with a series of firsts. He refused to stand on the platform to elevate himself above those around him (a sign that he might think of himself more as the “pope of the people”?). In a very humble gesure, instead of offering his blessing on those gathered at the Vatican to celebrate, he asked that they bless him.

I’m excited to see what Pope Francis is able to do in his time as the Pope – I’m hoping that he can help to reinvigorate the church! He is an extremely intelligent man (he has a masters degree in chemistry!) and prides himself on living humbly and giving back to the people.

Fairy Godmother

***Update: There was only one person in the world who told me the link to this was broken… thank you BFF Brigitte! 🙂 This post was actually from yesterday.

Today I officially became a godmother. Yup, it was Chloe’s baptism. She was such a good girl… She cried when they dunked her (hey, I would cry too if I was asleep and then suddenly dunked in water!) but was great the rest of the day.

I am beyond excited to be her godmother… It means so much to me that Kati and Nate chose Mike and I. My first piece of advice to her was whispered in her ear as we stood in front of the church: “You should never be naked in front of this many people again.”. I know, it’s the little lessons I look forward to sharing.

No, honestly, I am so excited to be a part of Chloe’s life and can’t wait to help her on her journey as a Catholic and in life. More pictures to come once I get them!

This one is of Chloe right after mass. She was not happy at all to be stuffed in her car seat and I’m sure worried that she was wrinkling her beautiful dress!

The Pope’s On Twitter!

Yup, you read that title right. Today Pope Benedict XVI joined Twitter. His English-language account is @pontifex (there are also seven other language accounts) and I’m not gonna lie, I followed him. Along with over a million other people.

Over the years I’ve tried not to post religious or political stuff here or on Facebook. For me, those are both very private things… and I feel everyone has the right to make their own decisions about both. Generally, those discussions lead to nothing but arguments anyway. I respect people who choose differently than me, as long as their decisions don’t impact my right to decide.

All of that said, I’m Catholic and for years have wondered how the church was going to “get hip”. Let’s be honest, the Catholic church hasn’t been “cool” for a long time. If you look at the bulk of the people in your church, most of the time it’s older folks. In my years of singing and directing choirs I’ve constantly wondered what the parish would look like in 25 years because when I looked around I didn’t see people my age.

Back to the Pope. I really like the Twitter idea. I think it’s a cool way to reach out to the younger , technology driven generation. Today he answered questions tagged with #askpontifex. We’ll see where it goes from here, but I think it’s a great way to reach out new and existing members.
